A short but powerful breed they are named after their homeland the rugged Ardennes region on the freance Belgian border. Before the 19th century the breed wast as massive and thickset as it is today and was used for riding and draft work, in the 17th and 18th century the breed was used a lot in battles it is said napoleon owed his safe return from the Russian campaign to this breed. The breed had well proven its worth in the cavalry and artillery
They are often kind, willing and gentle and for such a powerful horse are surprisingly energetic and active
